1.     Translational Pharmacogenomics – Discovering New Genetic Methods to Link Diagnosis and Drug Treatment

Gain an appreciation for common diseases, diagnostic tests and medical treatments. Discuss limitations to certain diagnostic tests and new genomic tests and biomarkers that provide more individualized treatment. Discuss drug discovery and the process that leads to widespread availability of new medications. Identify methods of using information from the human genome project to develop new diagnostic tests, discover new medicines and genomic tests that are used with medications.

2.     Global Health and the HIV Epidemic

Gain an appreciation for the 30 year history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Discuss common diseases, diagnostic tests and medical treatments in HIV infection. Review the impact of global health on childhood survival. Review UB's Global Health research and planning. Discuss limitations to certain diagnostic tests and new genomic tests and biomarkers that provide more individualized treatment. Discuss drug discovery, nanomedicine and immunology in global health challenges. Identify methods of using health information technology to develop new diagnostic tests, discover new medicines and monitor patients.

Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP)

http://cpmc.buffalo.edu/cstep/

The Translational Pharmacology Research Core is an active research site for students participating in CSTEP’s Summer Research Program.  Students matched with the TPRC are connected with a faculty mentor and project while also given the opportunity to participate in weekly group meetings to learn about other projects, programs, and initiatives currently underway.

McNair Scholars Program
http://cpmc.buffalo.edu/mcnair/

The Translational Pharmacology Research Core is an active research site for students participating in the McNair Scholar Program.  Students are paired with faculty mentors and projects based on their expressed interest in an area or type of research.
